Unfortunately, I have to make the difficult decision to stop breaking. There have been many uphill battles in these last 6+ years breaking and I have tried my best to deal with them. However, it has come to a point where it doesn’t make sense anymore.
Living in Hawaii has been a huge disadvantage as a breaker due to shipping cost, shipping speeds, and overhead costs that are just much greater than any of my competition in the mainland which ultimately bleeds into the business’s viability. These issues mentioned coupled with my inability to secure any product from Topps has basically made breaking essentially impossible.
As of October 1st, USPS has changed all inbound and outbound packages for Hawaii to much longer shipping speeds (10+ business days) and increased pricing of $8-$16 per bubble mailer depending on shipping service. When I started breaking over 6 years ago, shipping was under $4/bubble mailer, so these increases have been significant as shipping is the main cost to overcome as a breaker. Not to mention the inbound shipping cost I have to eat (easily $150-$250/box shipped to me).
So just this morning, I made the very tough decision to end breaking unless something changes in the near future. I am currently in the process of considering to move to another state to continue breaking, but that would mean I would have to stop opening my store. It’s a tricky situation for me and I am still unsure what I am planning to do.
I just want to thank everyone that has shown their support over these last 6 years and it is something that I will never forget. I started this business partially for fun, but also to learn about business. And I felt like I learned a lot throughout these years about all aspects of business that I didn’t have a clue about before. I showed up as consistently as I could and had a blast getting to know all of you. Thank you all for being part of my journey. I hope something changes in the future, but I am unsure what that looks like right now.
P.S. All your cards that I currently have will be mailed out like normal, so don’t worry. Also, I will honor the pick’em league grand prize (although there won’t be a weekly prize anymore) as well as the “Name My Shop” giveaway once they are completed.
